Healthy Habits: Skip the elevator, take the stairs

healthy-habits-rosengartTaking care of your health is a priority and nobody knows that more than physicians and healthcare providers. It can sometimes be difficult to find ways to stay healthy, so we’ve asked members of our Baylor College of Medicine community to share what they do in their daily lives to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Dr. Todd Rosengart, chair of the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery at Baylor, shares his favorite healthy snack (and his indulgent snack of choice).

Q: What healthy decisions start your day?
A: Stretching exercises, walking up stairs, not elevators

Q: What is your go-to healthy breakfast?
A: Oatmeal with berries

Q: What is your favorite type of exercise?
A: Interval training

Q: What keeps you motivated while you work out? (music, reading, etc.)
A: iPod (classic 80s)

Q: What activities do you do when you can’t fit in a full workout?
A: Jog

Q: What is your favorite healthy snack?
A: Toasted almonds or peanuts (OK; lightly buttered popcorn when I give in)

Q: How do you make an unhealthy recipe healthy (healthy substitutions)?
A: Take out the butter on bread.

Q: What hobbies do you have to help you relax?
A: Golf; walk when I can.

Q: What is your go-to Houston restaurant for a healthy meal?
A: True Food Kitchen and Relish – both excellent

Q: What is your favorite health tip that you live by?
A: Walk as much as possible
