Plans for dining al fresco? Our expert has tips to avoid food-borne illnesses and serving foods at the proper temperature. Don’t forget, in Texas where summer temperatures often climb over 90 degrees, food can sit out no longer than an hour before it is considered spoiled.

Nutritious, delicious eats

Some of those picnic favorites aren’t kind to your waistline. Check out our dietitian-approved recipes. Don’t miss this mayo-free potato salad and grilled shrimp and pineapple salsa recipe. Check out this skinny margarita recipe (but be careful with getting lime juice on your skin in the sun that could result in ‘margarita dermatitis’.

Fun in the sun

While it may be tempting to lay outside to get a healthy glow, experts say having just one sunburn in your life can increase the risk of skin cancer twofold. Prevention of sun damage and skin cancer is easy and your skin will thank you later.

Our doctors say there is no excuse to skipping sunscreen, especially if you are spending more time outdoors.  Dr. Rajani Katta, professor of dermatology at Baylor, said that some people are concerned about a sunblock allergy.

“It is not common to be allergic to sunblock, but it can happen. Normally you would see a rash or irritated skin a day or two after you use the product,” she said. Read more.

  1. Beating the heat is not difficult , if we plan a little.

    I keep plastic bottles of water in the freezer and grab one when going outside. As the ice melts, I have a supply of cold water with me. Also I wear loose-fitting Cotton clothing and that keeps me cooler than many synthetic fiber clothing.

    I Combat dehydration by drinking plenty of water along with sports drinks or other sources of electrolytes.
