Take precautionary measures to protect your eyes during the summer to prevent long-term damage to eyesight, said a Baylor College of Medicine ophthalmologist.

“Ultraviolet light, or UV exposure, has been linked to the development of macular degeneration, cataracts and other vision-loss problems,” said Dr. Elizabeth Baze, associate professor of ophthalmology at BCM.

If you have an existing eye condition like macular degeneration or cataracts, protecting your eyes from the sun should be a top priority during the summer, she said.

  1. I love the suggestion to wear sunglasses that wrap around to shield the skin around the eyes. This type of sunglasses can better protect your eyes from UV rays than the thinner sunglasses. I also like them better because sunglasses are usually used to make outside less bright. That won’t happen unless your eyes are completely covered from the sunlight.
