Papal blessing touts care of children

A year ago, Dr. Paul Klotman, president and CEO of Baylor College of Medicine, met members of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word at the time Baylor announced its new academic affiliation with Children’s Hospital of San Antonio. They became fast friends.

Klotman was impressed with the history of the first Sisters traveling from Galveston to San Antonio to establish a healthcare mission in 1869, and staying dedicated to meeting the needs of the children of San Antonio ever since.

This week, he was able to deliver a special gift to the Sisters. In front of a crowd of physicians, hospitals staff and Baylor leaders, Klotman presented a Papal Blessing he requested from the Vatican. Calling up the more than two dozen Sisters in attendance, he had them assist in unveiling the beautifully inscribed framed document.

It reads: “His Holiness Francis cordially imparts the requested Apostolic Blessing to the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio who have established covenants with dedicated Baylor physicians to care for the children of San Antonio in the spirit of charity, faith, hope and compassion.”

It was a special day for all, with the presentation of the papal blessing capping off a day of important sessions on research, education and clinical care that were held with hospital and Baylor leaders as the first anniversary of the affiliation nears.
